Haruko's World: A Japanese Farm Woman and Her Community
Published in Hardcover by Stanford Univ Pr (August, 1983)
Author: Gail Lee Bernstein
Average review score:

Excellent Non-Fiction. As Interesting as the Best Fiction!
In the early 1970s, Professor Gail Lee Bernstein lived with a rural farming family on Shikoku Island, Japan. There, she recorded the actions, words, thoughts, ideas, and struggles of her host family. As she overcame the initial resistance of her host family, and then eventually, that of the community in which she lived, Dr. Bernstein was exposed to a life that few foreigners had ever had a chance to write about.

Haruko (the matron of Bernstein's host family) helped, at and the same time, hindered, the ability of the author to record a true snapshot of the community. However, Bernstein's gift to cut through this tangle into the true hearts of her subjects allows her to understand what drives the residents of this community. In turn, Berstein is able to connect her community to the changes in Japan as a whole.

A must read for students of Japanese History and/or Cultural Anthropology, and a great-if-read by anyone else.

A must read
I think this is a good book for anyone who would like to know more about the Japanese families, and their culture. The writer went to Japan in the 80s and lived with a Japanese family and through them, she wrote this book. It deals especially with the relationship between a mother and her husband and children. The mother assumed the more traditional role of Asian women as she took care of everything and everyone in the household.

Besides that, most of the time, when we think of Japan, we usually have in mind, skyscrappers, the hectic life....but this book deals with the agriculture side of Japan.

It is a must read book as the author did a fantasic job of describing life in Japan as a foreigner, and the interaction she had with the villagers who had never or seldom met a foreigner.

Hearts of Darkness: The Amulet
Published in Paperback by PublishAmerica, Inc. (December, 2001)
Authors: Rhonda Lee and Ronda Lee
Average review score:

A ++++++++++++++
This book is a wonderful adaptation of the age-old dilemma, are vampires and the like real? The book shows a good blend of fantasy, romance and the occult, while keeping in tune with other vampire novels, this book gives new life to an "old" topic.

The characters in the book really blend together and develop nicely. Kala the main character in the trilogy has to struggle and deal with a lot of feelings and emotions that she has never had to do before, it is truly a wonderful story of how she handles herself and the choices she must make. While she looses someone very important to her, her world is turned upside down. She must learn who to trust and who to turn to. It truly is a remarkable journey that she must endure, even with help from her newly found friends Victor and Nathan, and she still must take a good portion of the burden herself. The way the tale unfolds each chapter leaves you craving more, and you are not disappointed. I found myself reading from Noon to Midnight more times than I care to remember, just because I could not put the book down, I wanted to finish, I needed to finish it. The author goes into great detail to create and develop the characters, providing you with history as to why they are where they are and who they are. You find yourself drawn into the book and caring for the Kala and Victor, you want to see only good things happen, but this is not your ordinary romance novel, it is intertwined with the occult and mystery.

When I finished the book, I was sad it was over, but exhilarated that another book would follow, so that I can find out what happens to Kala from here. I can't wait to see what happens in the next installment. It really is a must read!! Bravo to the Author, you have outdone yourself, the book is fabulous, and personally the EXTRA bonus is the fact that monies are donated to an Animal Rescue. That in itself is plus.

I said it before and I will say it again, Bravo Ms. Lee, can't wait to see what you do from here. I look forward to reading the next installment.

Excellent Book - 2 Thumbs up!
Purchased this book a few months back from reading an article about the book on web and newspaper. Both my wife and I have read this book and we were very impressed with the book. The book flows so well and its not just one type of subject. It combines occult, romance, action, adventure all into one title. To my suprise there was no real horror like you would assume any other book about vampires. My advice to anyone who likes to read about romance, vampires, wiccan, the occult this is a must read book. We look forward to the other books in this series once they are released.

Heaven and Earth

Author: Lee Williams

A true gift to living life joyfully
I was led to buying this book several years ago. I kept reading it and due to the "abstract" nature of the concepts on polarities and oneness, it serves as easy reading and fits into whatever I am experiencing in life. There are so much truth, insights and enlightenment in the content and that every time I read it, I got something new that I can truly apply to my life.

It is a pity that this is her only book - the first and the last but I was lucky to have come across this one when I was in Hawaii.

Learn How to truly live Heaven and Earth here and now.
Heaven and Earth is a beautiful, inspirational book to give to a special friend or as a special gift for yourself. It is a philosophical approach to living a creative, joyful life.

If you have been feeling stressed or out of balance in your life, this book will give you a calming, supportive perspective. It will change the way you look at life and your personal relationships. You will realize that you do not "live you life, but life lives you".

Lee Williams writes about the joy of life -- which always comes from within -- not from the outside. She tells you how you choose your experiences. If you focus your energy, attention and passion on that which you wish to create, you will manifest it.

Unconditional love allows you complete freedom to the degree to which you express it. You have complete free will to experience and to accept the responsibility of your choices in life. Freedom is a natural state. Anything less is a self-created limitation you have placed upon yourself by your limiting belief.

If you have been looking for growth of consciousness, this book is so clearly, yet lovingly written to give you the tools. It helps you to develop compassion and love for yourself.

Heaven and Earth is a tool for balancing. It grounds us in our daily lives, while connecting with our Higher Self--that we might truly live Heaven on Earth here and now. You will learn to live more lightly, allowing light and life to move through you easily, you will experience much joy, love and peace in your lives.

Here I Am: Contemporary Jewish Stories from Around the World

Authors: Marsha Lee Berkman and Elaine Marcus Starkman

A Must Buy
Once in awhile, not often, but once in awhile, a reader comes across a compilation that literally vibrates with the intensity of each of these wonderful stories. Everyone is unique, from different parts of the world, but all contain the central core of Jewish identity, which is a true tribute to all Jews in the State of Israel or the Diaspora. Congratulations to the editors. They have done a fine job of including well-known writers as well as introducing us to some exciting new authors. I only wish my copy was hard bound so that it could better stand the constant use.

A bedside gem !!!
After borrowing this book from a good friend, I couldn't pull myself from these beautifully written stories. Not only does this book present the centripetal connections of scattered Jewish souls, but its stories weave tales of all basic human experiences. Just take a peak at the table of contents, and you won't believe your eyes when you discover how truly successful the Diaspora was and has been for the Jewish community. Writers from Guatemala, Brazil, South Africa, Iraq, and China braid a captivating anthology that offers every reader something unique. A must buy!

never read anything like it
The words are written in a way that conjure up live sounds, the book reads like a piece of music. The stories are exciting and different. I have never read anything like this. Very innovative and expressive. Not ordinary, quite ground breaking.

Deep and funny
This book is amazing. The stories are dark but hysterical. They have a sarcastic, sexual, yet spiritual overtone that will make you want more. Intense and exciting. Kostrinsky is one of the deepest writers I have ever read. Get it.

This is more than a guidebook; it is an enticing narrative into a remote and spectacular wilderness land. Lee Mercer and Ralph Maughan lead you into the untraveled nooks and crannies of the Yellowstone Ecosystem with grace and respect for this most magnificant of landscapes. This is the best written, most informative, and most readable guidebook I've ever encountered. The photo quality makes the reader salivate for a chance to encounter this spectacular wilderness land in the first person. This book has something for everyone---from short day hikes to two week backpacking trips.
